
Burdock
Arctium lappa
A hardy biennial used in east Asian cooking and in Chinese & Western herbal medicine primarily for its detoxifying & blood cleansing properties. Young roots can be eaten raw while older roots (up to 90cm) are cooked or dried. The leaves & young flower stalks can be used like spinach or asparagus. Grows to 1.5-2m, summer flowering with a scarlet-purple thistle like flower. 35 seeds.
Sowing Instructions
Sow into trays to transplant later. Cover seed, keep moist in a cooler position (<10˚C is best). An erratic germinator, in that it germinates irregularly over a long period (2-6 months), so do not give up on too early. Sow in spring for late summer harvest or sow in late summer for spring/early summer harvest.
